The Toshiba microSD clocked in at 33.1MB/s read and 1.6MB/s write.

128GB a go in the Nokia 808 PureView?

Guest ‘flow’er Richard Trinkner brings us a very short report that he’s had success with at least one 128GB microSD card in the Nokia 808 PureView. OK, it’s only one data point, but for those who really do want to carry everything with them then it offers a glimmer of hope.

“Yesterday, the SanDisk 128GB MicroSDSX card that I ordered from Amazon arrived. I popped it into my Nokia 808 and it worked flawlessly out of the box.

I then shut down the 808, removed the card from the phone, and used an SD adapter to load 78 GB of music on to the card. That took about two hours on my laptop. Then I returned the card to the phone. The 808’s native music app took about an hour to index the tracks. After that, I was able to play music from the card and the phone reported its contents accurately. 

This is great news for me, as I can now carry my entire music collection around with me, without trying to rely on cloud services.”

Good to hear, Richard. I had all sorts of problems with 32GB and 64GB cards in my 808 a year or two ago, but maybe card compatibility has improved in the intervening time?

Some of us probably don’t think too much about it, but the type of memory card that you use in your camera, smartphone, or tablet really matters. For example certain brands might be slower but cheaper, while others are faster but more expensive. Some are also more durable and offer security features, while others are cheap and just offer the user storage space.
That being said, if you’re after a microSD or an SD card for your camera or mobile device, Samsung has you covered as the South Korean tech giant has recently unveiled a new memory card lineup that will be available in Samsung’s PRO, EVO, and Standard categories, depending on what you need it for and if you can justify the price difference.
For those who want something more performance orientated, the PRO and EVO lineup might be for you. Featuring support for UHS-I Grade 1 level performance, these cards will offer read speeds of up to 90MB/s and 48MB/s respectively.
Both lineups will also be able to survive immersion in seawater for up to 24 hours, in the event you drop your camera/phone in the pool or at the beach in seawater. It will also be able to ensure temperatures as low as -13F to 185F, so for those of you who will be in cold/hot environments, you can rest assured that your memory card will continue to function (your device on the other hand is a different story).
Pricing of Samsung’s new SD and microSD cards have yet to be revealed, but they will be on show at the Gadget Show this week so hopefully more details regarding pricing and availability will be revealed then.

A look at Sandisk’s 128GB micro SDXC card

The ultimate storage card for your Android also works great for cameras and laptops
Reviewing an SD card is hard. They pretty much work, or they don’t. But when Sandisk releases a 128GB micro SDXC card, we have to get one and check it out.
Storage junkies, meet your dream. After formatting and the few odd system files and folders Android puts on any removable storage, you have a full 119GB of space on top of whatever meager offering the folks who made your phone gave you. That’s about 100,000 high-res pictures, 40,000 songs, or 30 full length HD DVD rips. In short — it’s a whole lot of space for the things you need a whole lot of space for.

Your need for speed
The card itself is the exact same as any other micro SD card, other than the capacity. It’s class 10, so the read and write speed is good — listed at 30 MB/s read speeds, but ours was actually higher! Fast speeds means it won’t struggle while shooting HD video, or playing it back. After the capacity, the card speed is the most important thing about an SD card, and class 10 is pretty good. Our SD card speed tests (using the A1 SD Bench app) came in at 38.28 MB/s read, and 15.16 MB/s write speeds on the Sony Xperia Z1s, with no hacks or sd speed boosts installed.
The package comes with a Sandisk adapter, so you can use the card in a camera or a laptop. This is a good thing, because it’s also an excellent card for your camera or your laptop. It was able to take full resolution video and burst mode captures from both a Nikon DSLR and a Pentax point and shoot without any hiccups and at a nice clip thanks to the class 10 speed rating. When you plug it in to a computer, the transfer speeds were excellent as expected. All around, performance was very good.
KitKat woes

The card is everything you would want in a phone running Jelly Bean. Full-tilt reading and writing with any app, in any folder. But with KitKat — and the changes Google has made to Android — things are different. This isn’t the fault of the card, as the things it is allowed to do are still nice and speedy. Tested in the Note 3 running KitKat, you still have the full 119GB of space, but you don’t have the ability to write files anywhere and everywhere from your phone. We covered this and the reasons behind it right here, and it’s worth a look — especially if you have a KitKat device and are thinking of dropping a few bucks on a new high-capacity SD card.

The verdict:
All in all, I can recommend this card if you need the storage and have a phone that can use SDXC cards. I’ve tested in the Note 3, the Xperia Z1s, the Xperia Ultra and the Tegra Note 7 and had no issues other than KitKat “issues.” The card should also work fine in the Galaxy S4 series. It’s not cheap — checking in at $119.99 on Amazon — but if you have the need for this much storage you’ll be paying for it. Chances are the price will drop when and if other companies start to offer similar products. In the meantime, this is the big daddy many of you have been waiting for — and it works great!

Windows Phone 8 supports 128GB microSD cards

SanDisk has announced the availability of the world’s first 128GB microSD a few weeks ago at the MWC in Barcelona. It is the world’s highest capacity microSDXC card. But is your device even accepting 128GB memory cards?

Well, if you own a WP8-running Nokia Lumia 1520, then you can insert and use such card.
A user from the WP Central forum called NoRomBasic has tested SanDisk’s latest breakthrough – the 128GB microSD card – and it was fully compatible with a Nokia Lumia 1520. This means Windows Phone 8 supports cards up to 128GB capacity.
Even though the OS may know how to use such a big microSD card, some smartphone-specific requirements still may apply, so if you have another WP handset make sure you double check before you fork out the cash.

SanDisks’ Latest 128GB microSDXC Card Plays Nice With Windows Phone

During MWC 2014, SanDisk announced a new microSDXC UHS-I memory card that would offer up 128GB of storage. Typically microSD cards for smartphones would offer up to 64GB of storage, so SanDisk’s offering would basically make it the largest microSD card in the world, at least for now.
However there was a caveat in the press release by SanDisk, which is that they specially targeted the Android operating system. According to the press release, it reads, “Designed for Android smartphones and tablets, the new SanDisk Ultra microSDXC card provides consumers the highest storage capacity available in a removable form factor.” Does this mean that it won’t work on other devices that uses microSD as well?
The good news is that as far as Windows Phone handsets are concerned, it looks like it does work as well. This is according to WPC member NoRomBasic who claimed that he tried the microSD on his Nokia Lumia 1520 and it worked just fine.
According to him, not only does the card work, but there are no performance issues. In fact he claims that the card actually benches 20% faster than the SanDisk Ultra microSDXC 64GB model. Unfortunately this is pretty pricey storage as the card is priced at $200 each. However Amazon has it listed for $120 although you might have to wait 4-6 weeks for it to arrive.
For those who want more storage and don’t mind waiting for over a month for it to arrive, we guess this is a pretty good deal. Now we have to wonder if the this microSD card will play nicely with other phones, like BlackBerry handsets, for example.

128GB SanDisk Ultra microSDXC card review: Spacious, speedy and spendy

Between music, photos and video, I have a lot of media files. I store some of them on my phone, but there’s really only so far you can get when the average device maxes out at 16 or 32GB of internal storage. Cloud storage helps, but on a flight, for instance, I like to have the movies of my choice at my fingertips, rather than having to watch The Notebook (again).
Luckily, SanDisk’s latest microSDXC card raises the threshold for storage to 128GB, making it possible to carry your entire media library with you in a form factor no bigger than your pinky nail. It’s a little pricey, but if you’re looking for a convenient way to gain a ton of additional mobile storage and you have a device than can take advantage of it, it’s well worth it.
Design and compatibility

If you’ve ever seen a microSD card before, then you know that they’re extremely tiny. That’s mostly a good thing, since they really don’t add any weight or size when plugged into a device. On the other hand, that also makes them pretty easy to lose, especially if you have a small mason jar filled with different capacity cards like I do.
Unfortunately, SanDisk decided to go with a traditional black design for this card, rather than the red stripe on some of its other cards. That makes it a little less easy to find if you drop it on the floor. This is just nitpicky, though. Most people aren’t likely to switch between microSD cards on a regular basis.
The card comes with an adapter that allows you to use it in any SD slot, so it’ll work with digital cameras and be easily readable in computers. The adapter can also handle standard microSD and microSDHC cards.

I was a little worried about compatibility. Pretty much all smartphones and tablets officially support the microSDHC standard, which maxes out at 32GB.
MicroSDXC is a newer standard that allows these tiny memory cards to support larger amounts of storage (all the way up to 2TB!). But while most smartphones only officially list support for cards up to 32GB, I haven’t had much trouble getting them to recognize my 64GB card over the last couple of years (though there have been a few exceptions). Luckily, I didn’t experience any compatibility problems with the 128GB card.
The card worked just fine in an Android-based Sony Xperia Z Ultra smartphone and a Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 tablet. I also had no trouble using it with an Apple MacBook Air or a Sony Google TV. One interesting thing to note, though: The MacBook Air was able to read 127.82GB of available space, while the Android devices were only able to see 119GB.
Benchmarks
The SanDisk Ultra is a class 10 UHS-I card. According to SanDisk, it is up to twice as fast as ordinary microSD cards. I tested its read and write speeds using the A1 SD Bench benchmark on Android and Xbench on Mac. SanDisk touts up to 30MB/s read speeds, which the card was actually able to surpass. Write speeds were closer to 15MB/s, which is still plenty fast.

It isn’t quite as speedy as SanDisk’s Extreme cards, which can hit read speeds of 80MB/s and write up to 50MB/s. Essentially, the faster a card is, the faster you’ll be able to transfer files. It can also impact things like camera speed, allowing you to capture more frames per second than a slower card. The 128GB card should be fast enough for just about everyone, and I had no trouble recording 1080p video directly to it.

Is it worth it?
With issues of speed and compatibility out of the way, the only thing that might stop you from picking up a new 128GB card is its price. The card has an MSRP of $199.99, which is pretty steep. But you can get it from Amazon or Best Buy for $119.99, which is still pricey, but a lot more reasonable.
The 128GB card is more expensive than buying a couple of 64GB cards, which you can get for about $45 apiece. But I’d say that extra $30 is worth the convenience of not having to swap out cards constantly.
You can also rationalize it this way: A 128GB card isn’t nearly as expensive as paying for more internal storage for your device upfront. Most smartphones cost an extra $100 to move from 16GB to 32GB variants. So if you have a ton of media, SanDisk’s 128GB microSDXC doubles the amount of storage previously available to you on a memory card. It might not be the cheapest storage solution, but for many people, it will be the best.

At Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain, SanDisk announced the largest capacity MicroSD card ever created.  This 128 GB is more storage than anything on the market for its size.  It can be used in cell phones, computers (with an adapter), tablets, cameras and of course video cameras.
I personally have a difficult time deleting any surveillance video from my memory cards as to me it represents the original video source.  With the 128 GB SanDisk card I wouldn’t have to worry about purchasing a new memory card every few months.  I could probably store a years’ worth of video on one card.

Project Tango With 3D Mapping with your Phone
Google has partnered up with a company named Movidius to create a phone that has the capabilities to map different areas using an infrared camera, tracking camera and a 4 megapixel camera.  The infrared camera detects depth though heat.  If something is further away the color in that area will be darker than something much closer.
The cell phone camera also has the capabilities of mapping out are room in 3D. The video in this article show the demonstration of the technology.  This is just the beginning of some of the things that it can do.  Once developers begin developing applications for the camera the sky is the limit.
I could see this being used in crime scenes with law enforcement or security professionals wanting to have a 3 dimensional layout of a business or home to provide security suggestions.
The technology is only limited to the imagination of the application developers and designers.  I will share anything else that comes up on this product in the future.

The said microSD is a Class 10, UHS-1 card. Benchmark numbers have yet to be seen widespread, but it is marketed to have speeds up to 30MB/s. Though it is not as fast as SanDisk’s Extreme Pro line with its 95MB/s file transfer speed, the 128GB storage on such a small chip is astonishing.
It was only 10 years ago when microSD cards (previously called TransFlash cards) were available at only 128MB storage. A decade later, the storage capacity has increased a thousandfold.

This card can do it all, so you can quickly capture, play back, and transfer 1080p full-HD, 3D, and 4K video, as well as the highest-quality movies, photos, and songs. It also happens to work in smartphones, tablets, digital cameras and the latest sports camcorders.

It should be noted that Lexar’s high-speed 600x microSD cards run great in sports cameras like the GoPro HD Hero 3 Black Edition where you need a card capable of handling high bit rates when you are shooting in 1080P at 60fps or 4K (3840×2160) at 15 fps. Leading cameras like the GoPro HERO3+ Black Edition require the use of a Class 10 memory card. Not all Class 10 microSD cards have the same data write speeds, so you really need to watch what card you buy as you might be stuck with something that doesn’t work properly. One of the nice things about this memory card is that it comes with a tiny USB 3.0 adapter to ensure that you are able to get the most performance possible from file transfers as long as you have a computer that has USB 3.0 ports.  As with any memory card, the host system and the device you are using it on will play a major roll in the performance you’ll see with this card.

The USB 3.0 adapter is very simple to use as the microSD card just slides in the end and you are good to go. The microSD slot is not spring loaded, so you have to use your fingernail to pull the microSD card out with the raised edge at the end.

We tried out the Lexar High-Performance microSDHC 633x 16GB UHS-I Mobile Flash Memory Card on an Intel Ultrabook (ASUS Zenbook Prime UX31A) running Windows 8.1 and also our Samsung Galaxy S4 smartphone running Android 4.3. Let’s see if we can hit that 95MB/s speed rating on the next page!

The Vodafone K4201 3G dongle comes with support for major operating systems like Windows 8, Mac, Linux, Fedora and Ubuntu. The Vodafone K4201 3G dongle also comes with a 32 GB micro SD card slot.

HuaweiAccording to Vodafone, this dongle features a dialer with enhanced user support functionality such as web chat, help line number on dash board, online banner for Vodafone offer updates, and troubleshooting guidance for common error codes. The dongle also said to allow users to set data usage limit alerts, and monitor usage.

Huawei E5331
It is available for around Rs 3,500 and allows net access for 8 devices simultaneously. It has a 1500 mAh battery that claims to provide five hours of continuous usage or 250 hours of standby. Huawei E5331 promises 21.6 Mbps download speed and upload of up to 5.76Mbps with Wi-Fi 802.11b/g/n. It has four indicators that shows for network, WiFi status, battery level and messges. There is a on/off button as well for easy control.

Huawei E8131
Currently available for around Rs 2,500, the Huawei E8131 can function both as a data card for a single user, or as a mobile WiFi hotspot which can connect up to five WiFi-enabled devices. It comes with Type3i technology, which according to Huawei, provides up to 20 per cent more upload and download speeds compared to non-Type3i devices.

The Huawei E8131 promises 21.6 Mbps download speeds. It has also a 32 GB micro SD card slot.
